SSI - Scuba Schools International
As part of an industry serving 2.5 million active divers and 67 million
snorkelers, Scuba Schools International is one of the most trusted
names in scuba diving.
SSI has set the standard for scuba diving
certification since 1970, with more than 27 regional offices,
represented in more than 110 countries and more than 2.400
international locations, as well as materials printed in 25 languages.
The SSI Philosophy
A reliable dive buddy is very important. That is why more and more
divers choose SSI. SSI is one of the largest training organizations in
the world. For over 35 years the SSI name has stood for safe and
quality education with a built-in fun factor.
SSI Education is offered only by SSI authorized facilities and resorts
that provide the competence and experience you deserve. Because quality
and care counts, learning to dive with SSI is truly the best way to
learn to dive.
SSI Discover Scuba / Try Scuba
The
Discover Scuba Diving program or Scuba Discovery introduces people to
scuba diving in a highly supervised and relaxed manner. It dispels
common misconceptions about scuba by letting individuals try it for
themselves. Under the guidance of a PADI, SSI or SDI professional, new
divers learn basic safety concepts, put on equipment and swim around
underwater in a closely supervised environment. The Discover Scuba
Diving program can take place in a swimming pool, protected confined
open water area and at an open water dive site — anywhere an
appropriate, positive introduction to scuba diving is possible. After trying scuba, many new divers may decide to repeat the experience. If not immediately, then on other occasions or in different areas. Others
will choose to pursue certification by enrolling in a Scuba Diver or
Open Water Diver course. The desired result is to excite people about
scuba diving and encourage additional participation.
When certain requirements are met, new divers may earn credit toward Scuba Diver and Open Water Diver certification.

AOW - Advanced Open Water .................................................................................................
The
Adventures in Diving (Adventure Diver, Advanced Open Water or the
Advanced Adventurer) programs provides divers with a structured means
to explore special diving interests and gain dive experience. Participating in an Adventure Dive is often the first step novice
divers take after their initial certification. However, all divers
benefit from the program’s flexibility and the opportunity it provides
for discovery and exploration. The program allows student divers to
customize their training path and learn various underwater tasks that
broaden their awareness of the environment and their capabilities as
divers.
RESCUE .................................................................................................
The
Rescue Diver course is a pivotal step in expanding a diver’s knowledge
and experience. Rescue Divers learn to look beyond themselves to
consider the safety and well-being of other divers. This is why the
Rescue Diver certification is a prerequisite for all leadership-level
training (Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and Open Water Scuba
Instructor). Rescue Diver training expands the basic problem
prevention and accident management skills student divers learn
beginning with the Open Water Diver course. At the Rescue Diver level,
students are ready to learn to manage more complex dive emergencies and
to apply direct intervention techniques to assist others in an
emergency. By its nature, the course is demanding, though realistic in
its conduct, content and approach. Although the nature and context in
which rescue training may be used is serious, the course should be an
enjoyable challenge that builds diver confidence.
DM - DiveMaster .................................................................................................
The
Divemaster or Dive Control Specialist courses involves higher level
learning that begins at the Rescue Diver course and expands in the
Divemaster course. The Divemaster course expands the problem solving
skills developed by the Rescue Diver or Stress and Rescue program, and
extends it from accident management and prevention scenarios to
supervisory situations with student divers and certified divers.
At the
divemaster level, problem solving emphasizes looking for many possible
solutions under the circumstances and choosing the best of several. Divemaster problem solving may include more than safety-related issues,
and include handling customer service, business and operational
challenges. The course also addresses attitudes and judgment.
Attitudes
are emotional influences that shape individual choices ranging from
professional behavior, role modeling, personal health and following
safe diving practices, to very basic values, such as honesty. Judgment
applies attitudes, experience, theoretical knowledge, deduction and
intuition to problem solving and making decisions based on variables,
sometimes under circumstances that aren’t “black or white.”
